Advance DirectivesJust as advancements in technology have changed the way healthcare is delivered today, the patient’s responsibilities related to their care have developed as well. Among these new responsibilities is preparing for certain, unanticipated outcomes such as becoming incapacitated and unable to make your own healthcare decisions. Among the best tools for taking caring control of your medical future are Advance Directives. Since 1991, Ohio has recognized two types of Advance Directives. The Living Will allows you to document in advance the type of care you would like to receive should you become permanently ill and unable to communicate. The Healthcare Power of Attorney allows you to establish someone else who can make decisions for you. In 1998, Ohio added the Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) Order, which enables a person to direct a physician, in advance, to place a DNR order prohibiting CPR in the event the individual’s heart or breathing stops.
You need to be aware that while under the care of the Surgery Center, since you are having and elective procedure performed, Advanced Directives will not be honored. However, if you have an Advanced Directive you are welcome to provide us with a copy of it when you are admitted. In the event that you’re transferred to another facility we will send your Advance Directive to that facility. If you would like more information regarding Advance Directives or the appropriate forms, please don’t hesitate to ask!
